Criminal

Jonathan is an experienced barrister specialising in criminal law with a strong Crown Court practice encompassing the full range of prosecution and defence work. He is frequently instructed in cases involving serious and complex crime, including financial crime, drug-trafficking, money-laundering, and confiscation proceedings. Substantial experience of cases involving serious and complex fraud, lengthy investigations and large-scale disclosure exercises. Regularly instructed by CPS and other government agencies including the SFO, DWP and NPS. A strong track-record advising and appearing on behalf of clients charged with driving offences Appellate experience in Court of Appeal and Administrative Court. CPS panel advocate grade 3.

Regulatory

Jonathan provides both advocacy and written advice in relation to a whole range of regulatory matters with a particular emphasis on representing professionals in disciplinary matters. Recent cases have involved the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority.

Direct Access

Jonathan regularly undertakes instructions from direct access clients across a wide range of matters, both civil and criminal. Recent cases include driving offences, fraud, assault, professional negligence, immigration and breach of contract.

LPP Counsel

Jonathan has a wealth of experience acting as LPP counsel in investigations involving fraud, bribery and corruption; he is currently instructed as LPP counsel on the SFO investigation into Rolls Royce.

  • R (McKenzie) v Director of Serious Fraud Office [2016] EWHC 102 Admin – LPP counsel in relation to landmark ruling on lawfulness of SFO procedure for isolating potentially LPP material embedded in electronic devices.
  • Operation Tulip (2014) Southwark CC – Instructed by SFO in £23 million ponzi-fraud/bribery case (disclosure counsel)
  • R v S (2014) Snaresbrook CC – Prosecution counsel on s.18 GBH trial where victim sustained permanent brain damage
  • R v Parker (Court of Appeal) [2013] EWCA Crim 184 - Acted for respondent in appeal against conviction based on fresh expert evidence obtained after guilty verdict. Successfully resisted appeal on basis that appellant had been on notice of the existence of the material on which his expert evidence was based prior to the trial.
  • R v G (2013) Blackfriars CC – Prosecution counsel in conspiracy to supply class A drugs trial and confiscation proceedings that followed.
  • R v B (2013) Southwark CC – Blackmail involving homophobia and threats of serious violence
  • R ex parte n & x (a minor) v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2012] - Appeared in judicial review proceedings in QBD of High Court: case concerned article 8 ECHR right to family life and duty to consider interests of the child under s.55 BCIA (2009)
  • R v Johnson (2012) Privy Council Jamaica - junior counsel on appeal against conviction for murder.
